The logo for the CUBIST (Cultural Business: Impact, Strategy and Technology) Research Group has its origins in Pablo Picasso's painting `Les Demoiselles d' Avignon' (The girls of Avignon). Painted in 1907, the oil on canvas is considered by many to be a crucial stimulus for the Cubist movement. The painting consists of five nudes whose forms are geometric, structured and twisted. The faces of the central two nudes show the influence of Iberian sculpture, while those on the right are reminiscent of African art forms. The CUBIST Research Group logo is loosely based on the geometrical mask of the nude seated on the right of the group - the so-called `crouching figure'. The Group's logo, with its symbolic fusion of culture, heritage and the arts, is analogous with the diverse range of research interests of the Research Group. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon can now be seen in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York.
